Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategy for utilizing Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME) as biogas at PT Gawi Makmur Kalimantan using SWOT analysis. POME contains high organic matter and can be processed through anaerobic treatment to produce biogas, so its utilization can support waste management, alternative energy use, and operational sustainability. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, direct observation, documentation, and literature review involving five informants directly related to POME and biogas operations. Data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, conclusion drawing, and classification of internal and external factors into Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. The findings show that POME utilization at PT Gawi Makmur Kalimantan is already implemented through an integrated anaerobic treatment system and the resulting biogas is utilized to support operational energy needs. The main strengths are continuous POME availability, competent human resources, management commitment, operational experience, standard operating procedures, and regular maintenance. Weaknesses include fluctuations in POME characteristics, pipe blockage, sludge accumulation, maintenance requirements, weather influences, and unstable biogas production. Opportunities include alternative energy development, reduced dependence on fossil fuel, cost efficiency, technological development, and renewable energy opportunities. Threats include regulatory changes, rapid technological development, operational disruption, and possible declines in fresh fruit bunch production. The resulting strategies emphasize installation optimization, POME monitoring, preventive maintenance, human resource development, gradual technology upgrades, regulatory anticipation, and improved energy utilization.
