Abstract

Islamic education plays a strategic role in shaping the civilization and character of the community, particularly in Indonesia, which has a long history of development through institutions such as Islamic boarding schools (pesantren), surau (prayer rooms), and langgar (small mosques). However, in the era of globalization and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4.0), Islamic education faces various challenges, such as digitalization, shifting learning paradigms, and the demands of 21st-century competencies. This paper aims to examine the future of Islamic education through an integrated and interconnected approach between religious and general knowledge as an effort to address the challenges of the times. The method used is a literature review, analyzing the concepts, challenges, and strategies for developing Islamic education. The study's results indicate that the integration and interconnection of knowledge is a crucial paradigm in eliminating the dichotomy of knowledge, resulting in a holistic and relevant education system. The main challenges include the low quality of human resources, moral decline, and lagging behind in the use of technology. Strategies for developing future Islamic education include developing a competency-based curriculum, implementing active and creative learning, integrating technology, utilizing digital media, and developing an inclusive curriculum. With this strategy, Islamic education is expected to produce a generation that excels spiritually, intellectually, and socially, and is able to compete globally without losing Islamic values.
